The Bison – November 19, 1993

Directed by Tracy Haggin-Dahl, this year's musical play "Our Town", consisting of many different scenes, will be performed by the Buffalo High School drama club. The play is a multi-act production that will take place in the school auditorium. The cast has been working hard to prepare for the performance, and the students are excited to show the community what they have been working on. The play will be performed on Friday, November 19, and Saturday, November 20, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the school office or at the door. All proceeds from the play will go toward the drama club's upcoming spring production.

School will not be in session from November 23-dec to conferences and Thanksgiving. This is a change from last year when school was closed the week before Thanksgiving and the week after. The change was decided because it was deemed that it was better to have conferences the week before Thanksgiving and then have the holiday week. School will be in session on Monday, November 20, and then students will leave during the last day of that week.

The Buffalo Speech Team season will be in December and continues until April. Coach Dave Alto and his students are working hard to prepare. For more information on meeting times is announcements early next month.

The Knowledge Bowl team will be starting in early December. The team competes approximately seven times in a year in three of five competitions. Interested students should listen for announcements in early December.

Practices for Odyssey of the Mind began on Tuesday, November 9, and teacher Gayle Zimmerman is the coach for the 1998-99 season.

The Fall Band "Concert" was performed on Tuesday, November 9 at 8:00 in the auditorium. The performing were the Concert Band, Symphony Band, and Varsity Band. Each band performed two or three selections. A short number was performed finished with a finale by the Marching Band.

National Honor Society held their annual Food Drive last week. Students in grades 9 and 10 contributed in most classes. The food collected will be delivered to local food banks. The students will receive class privileges for their hard work.

Someone "said they enjoyed the decorations." There are many parties and crazes in the popular many fun things that students get to enjoy.

"Though it is a rather simple thing, it is a lot of fun," said one student. "It seems everyone in the acting class is part of the fun."

It is fun working with everyone, and it is a great party too. Some students said they enjoyed the music, and they had a lot of fun.

There are also many people in the school who are part of the fun. They are working hard to make it a success.

The Buffalo High Environmental Science class, taught by Dave Pinder, is working on a project to collect money for recycling. The class is teaching students about the importance of recycling and how it can help the environment. The class is also working on a project to collect cans and bottles for recycling.

"We've learned that recycling can help save energy and resources," said one student. "It's also good for the environment."

PLAY IT AGAIN, Sam: Concert Band members change feelings into music at the Concert Band concert held in the School Hall November 9. The Varsity and Symphony Bands performed ten musical pieces, and the Marching Band performed with selections from the concert. The performance was a great success.

The International Club has began with the activities in foreign exchange students. This year there are fourteen exchange students from a wide variety of countries including Germany, Finland, the Ukraine, Russia, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Japan.

International Club members can participate in many activities, such as learning about different cultures and having meals with exchange students. The club also hosts events like movie nights, game nights, and cultural presentations.

HANGING OUT AT THE MALL: mods provides time to think, and plan what still has to be done.

For many music students, Mods is a time to play in ensembles, work on trouble spots in music, or just listen to CDs and tapes of various groups and people. Here, a jazz guitar group practices, led by Steve Breslin.

Many groups have meetings during Mods to plan special events. This saves many people from having to stay after school.

The gym is a popular place to spend Mods for students who want to play sports, let emotions out, or just have fun.

The weight room is especially busy during Mods with students lifting weights to condition themselves for sports, or just working out some steam.

Censorship seems to be on the rise; 300 censored, or attempted to be censored, in 1979 as documented in The American Library Association's 'The Censorship Yearbook.' The books 'The Outsiders' by S.E. Hinton, 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry, 'Anne Frank, and 'The Outsiders' by S.E. Hinton, were among many books that were banned in 1979 by some public schools and libraries. The books were banned because persons, sometimes, thought they were too controversial. There were over 400 lines of the play 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Hamlet' that were banned in books like Vicious.

Books are censored because of censorship is the restriction or removal of information. Book banning is an example of this, which happened many times throughout history. For example, people such as teachers, librarians, school administrators, and concerned citizens are often the ones who do it.

Teachers and librarians and school administrators censor books when they decide which books are too obscene or dangerous for students. Parents can censor when they allow their children to see certain videos or listen to certain songs because they are inappropriate.

Some teenagers will inappropriate amount of information is available through a range of media including television, newspapers, telephones, magazines, and books. Along with terminology, students learn to communicate with each other, the complexity of censorship can grow, according to 'Censorship' by C.L. Taylor.

According to the Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary means "officials who examine publications, or films, are responsible, but"definitively not otherwise. The media should be able to cover all angles of a story, and agrees with this package.

How much control is too much? This is one of the debates that has much control over what people get to see and read needed today," said junior Chris Weisman.

While some consider great works in literature other unsuitable, "I think that they are trying to control what you learn from the books you read, like the best books in America," said senior Liam [unclear].

For instance, some American literature has been censored for racism, but really tells a bit about the culture of the time. Some people believe that the media should be able to decide for you the information you receive.

"I think it's [unclear] good because it tells people what is going on, but it's not what they need to know," said sophomore Rachel Grayfish.

There are often conflicts over whether or not the media should be censored. "I really think that there is too much violence in the media, but I don't believe it should be censored. Maybe they could try a warning system that says beware, it's violent," said junior Mia Martin.

Certain students shade that certain types of violence should be censored. "I think violence should be [unclear]" said senior [unclear].

Certain students feel that many freedoms are guaranteed by the Constitution. It's a free country and you should be able to say and do what you want to say," said junior Andy Safford.

Andy Safford believes that censorship is an infringement on the rights of the people in the Bill of Rights.

"I think that in a free society that people have the right to free speech and freedom of the press," said junior Nicky Kelm.

Censorship in today's society ranges from T.V. shows to books, and it has to be stopped. Someones censorship or something else is becoming quite absolute and others decide what gets censored, and so on.

The feels that censorship is going against all the Constitution of the United States for freedom.

Perhaps it is relevant to say, what we want to say, and express ourselves the way we want to.

Day after day, people, legislators, and society in censorship is what we can say, or that won't be offered anyone.

Isn't that what the Constitution should be about our decisions?

The Bison feels that people want to limit others' freedom, a reaction to fear. If everybody had their all the time, we wouldn't be able to do anything without offending someone.

Take for example, Beatles and Band of MTV. Many people find them annoying and shouldn't be on, but they find them entertaining. Ever.

Everything is do right, it's just an entertainment show that many people don't like. The Bison feels that if shows on TV, it's not appropriate for children. They shouldn't be shown during times when children and parents should talk to their children about what is appropriate to watch.

Because the Beatles and Band were not created for the children. The Bison thinks that they were created for everyone. It is understood that people can and they do not have to.

Treat people like animals. The Bison knows that day after day, censorship is happening. Many people have no matter how hard they try to say it. They will always be discrimination. It is not fair to the people, especially teenagers, to get involved. Without students and teenagers involved, nothing will change.

For most of us, our look pretty bright, but censorship and discrimination continue, and future look dim for everyone to face.

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the health care issue. I’m also quite sure that you are utterly sick and tired of all the discussion that is in the news about it. It’s one of those things, like campaign slogans, that you just cannot get away from.

Most of you know that my mom is from England. They have National Health there. Their health care system is a disaster.

My Nanna (Grandma), has glaucoma, a disease which severely affects the eyes and will cause blindness if not treated immediately. After being diagnosed with the disease, she had to wait four months to see a doctor to begin treatment. My Grandad, after complaining of chest pains on and off for some time, finally got in to see a doctor and was told he was a silly old man and not to worry, it was only indigestion. A year later he was told he had had three heart attacks. When he had the fourth one, he was told to go to bed and eat no red meat for ten days. His fifth heart attack put him into a coma. Now, after having two more, only one fourth of his heart muscles work. The limits of his everyday activities are amazing -- he cannot even turn a screw with a screwdriver. Other relatives and friends have had similar problems.

If you haven’t gathered by now, through personal experience, I am totally against a national health care system. Nothing you can say will change my opinion, since I have seen the other side. I have seen the wards that contain 30 beds with thin curtains between them, most of which do not have intercoms to call nurses. I have seen how the months drag by for someone who’s waiting for treatment that, in the U.S., would be done in a matter of days.

If your family doctor determines that tests are necessary, such as blood tests or X-rays, another appointment must be made because the doctor cannot legally use the machine at the time. Getting this new appointment can take anywhere from two weeks to two years, depending on the test.

Hospitals close at night in an effort to save money. If there is an accident during the night, the injured has an incredibly hard time trying to find a hospital that is open to help them.

If a someone needs kidney dialysis, they must first pass aboard of doctors that considers your case. People under 18 are not considered. The older you are, the better chance of getting the dialysis because, in their opinion, you will not be on it as long as someone who is 20 years old.

The diagnostic procedures that are commonplace here are rarely found there. Things like routine mamograms and pap smears, done at least every year in the U.S., are only done once every five years in England. Lists for joint replacements and transplants are horribly long, often resulting in the death of the patient while waiting. All too often a diagnosis is not made soon enough to cure a disease. Thousands of people die every year as a result.

Isn’t it ironic that as our government is trying to introduce a national health care system, England is phasing theirs out? They have found, over the years, the program is not efficient enough to handle the number of people requiring care. Increases in the monthly premium paid by all working people is not enough to keep the program working. The financial situation is now so acute that each family doctor, hospital, and specialist is allotted a predetermined amount of money each month. This money must cover all costs including everything from tongue depressors to the medicines that are prescribed to patients. Obviously, the amount of money being invested into new hospitals, new equipment, and research is very minimal.

DO WE REALLY WANT THIS IN THE U.S.?

The system that is currently in place in the U.S. works fine for a majority of people, but obviously needs major overhaul to encompass the elderly, the poor, the self-employed, and the chronically sick. I don’t have an answer. I don’t even have a suggestion of where we can start. All I know is that in my corner of the world, something between the two extremes must be possible for all concerned. I feel sorry for the uninsured and the underinsured as the system stands today.

I know this is a controversial issue, and most of you will not agree with me, but I hope that by writing this I have stirred a few thoughts, and challenged a few ideas.

Barney the dinosaur is a great teacher.

Honest.

Not that I sit there and watch him all the time, but my little sister is the queen of T.V and she watches him.

One day over MEA, we were watching the show, and he was discussing how all people are different.

That was an interesting point.

From the time you are three, you hear how every one is an individual, and how every one is different than every one else.

It’s strange, because teachers always stress the individuality point. Not that most people have the same feelings about things at sometime or another in their life times.

Teachers never stress how you feel when someone picks on you or how someone else feels when you pick on them.

Take the bully for example; don’t they understand how they make people feel?

Of course they do. They themselves have felt that way after being picked on and showed around by a bigger bully than they are.

Not that being picked on is the only time people have similar feelings. There are many others, like when someone close dies, for instance.

The funny thing is even though people have similar feeling, no two people can have exactly the same feeling about any given subject, or event.

There are also degrees of difference about feeling different things.

One person may be more emotional, or feel more strongly about things than others.

Now, thinking about all this, maybe the teachers were right.

Maybe there are so many more differences than similarities, that they were right to stress all the differences.

Just looking at some of them, boys and girls feel completely different things, and one gender looks at things completely different than the other does.

Why is this?

Is there a specific reason for this? Is it something chemical?

I think that, probably at some point in their life, everyone has asked that question, and there just isn’t an answer right now.

Some people try to pin it on hormones, but that just isn’t it. It’s got to be more than that.

Anyway, it will just be one of those unexplained mysteries of the world, just like why little kids enjoy watching some guy run around in a big purple dinosaur suit.

You know it’s pretty sad when you walk to the door, and your toes freeze before you even go outside!

Yes folks, it’s that time of year again! I think Minnesotans use this line frequently.

Ya know, the seasons change just like people do. Well, not exactly, but close.

Being a senior feels weird, all of a sudden, you feel like an alien. I know hardly anyone besides the people in the senior class.

I look at my peers and myself and see a major change.

When we were freshmen, we too had high spirits and spazzy moments. (Sorry, but every freshman in the world is going to get slammed now)

We didn’t always use our heads or think ahead as to what could happen.

Everyday I think of how my spirit from the young years to now has calmed. From my friends I hear the same words I’m thinking. “What college do I go to?” “Can I afford it?” “Do I get a job and where?” “Do I stay home?” (Not me) “What do I do on my own?”

Everywhere I see my own shadow -- where am I going? What am I doing?

I live for today now because I don’t know what I’ll be doing tomorrow.

I feel a lot of pressure from my parents. But don’t we have to do what makes us happy in life? That’s what I thought.

Oh, and speaking of pressure. Not only are a lot of people, especially Seniors, walking around with the word COLLEGE glued to their forehead, but I see a lot of -- who do I date?

This part of my column is dedicated to everyone and everyone in 5th hour person to person.

Ponder this thought for a while... Do you want to go steady with ONE person throughout high school, get married and live on? Or do you want to date numerous people before you settle down?

I guess there are pros and cons to either side, but my view is to date.

To me, it’s important to find qualities and personalities I want in my future.

I can’t be sure or secure of someone else when I can’t feel the same of myself!

I guess as we grow older, the questions to ponder are larger.

To best meet questions unknown, we change.

We change just like the seasons change.

As the seconds counted down on the clock, excitement mounted in the football players. For they knew what a challenging year had been.

10-8. Feelings of relief and forgiveness filled the players for the season. It was difficult for them a few days earlier, but now they could breathe easy.

"And what it was is feeling great," said senior Pete Miller. "Thoughts about how difficult it was, and how far we have come, are in the back of my mind."

Teams tonight, senior Pete Miller said, were in the back of his mind.

"It was a dream come true," said senior [unclear].

1-0. Section AAA had slammed the Buffaloes. Bison congratulated. The team is now preparing to go against [unclear].

"Osiris is a really good team, that's for sure," said Dennis, "though they'll be hard."

The players feel their strength was [unclear].

I don't know if they have any weakness."

The fall sports are quickly (and almost certainly) coming to an end. Soccer meets and games are all tallied up.

The varsity tennis team was successful, finishing with an outstanding 7-0 in the North Subterranean and 1-3, overall. Senior [unclear] and junior [unclear] played tennis for Buffalo in that quarter-final.

Even though the tennis team is one of the best in the Charlie Keitlen foes the team [unclear].

"All combined to the worst and Keitlen," said [unclear].

The varsity soccer team finished with a record of 5-1 in the conference and regular season play. In post-season play, the soccer players early on, but they managed to [unclear].

"Regardless of all the hardships we took, the team played with heart and I'm proud that they can hold their heads high."

The swimming and diving team finished with a record of 8-3. Many team members, including all four varsity and many of their team members, switched to Section 12 and November 13 at Sioux Cloud High School. If they advance, they will play in the [unclear] at the University of Minnesota.

In the conference, the girls' cross country team finished a well earned season with a record of 4-3 in conference regular season. In mid-season, they played against [unclear].

The cross country runners found that they were very successful in the [unclear] with a record of 4-3.

"It is certainly a pleasure to work with them," said [unclear].

The varsity volleyball team finished an amazing season with a record of 11-1 in conference regular season. They received in post-season play.

"The varsity team did their best this season, they have 19 wins. They played well, and they'll be back next year."

On Friday, November 12, their main-quarter game against Sioux Falls was a [unclear]. Buffalo was a mid-season loss. 14-7. They finished their season with a record of 5-4.

The Buffalo Swimming and Diving teams have come to a successful end. For some, this means the end of a season, but for others, it is the start of something more.

We have had our variety of swimmers qualify for various competitions. Our Junior High swimmers had significant success, and they have made sectionals. They have won several medals and trophies. They have improved much day by day.

At the pool, the presence of Angie Teon, Leanne Engvalt, Kim Kealy, Amy Spooner, Jenn Moister, Shelley Park, and Lina [unclear] was felt. "I wish others could experience how hard we work and quit on swimming," said Amy Spooner. All of the team's hard work and dedication paid off. They are a great team. We become stronger when we support each other. We make a lot of extra time and effort for the members of the team and they are always there for us.

Making a big splash this year: Buffalo's Swimming and diving teams have just completed a successful season of much cheer to the section tournament.

The Bison football team lost a game to the Orono Orioles on Friday. The tough game was played in the rain at Buffalo. While they may not have won, they were very close to getting the win. They tried hard despite the weather conditions.

The swimming and diving team did better than expected at sectionals on November 12 and 13. They performed three times better than their previous scores from last year.

Winter sports are already started this year. The Ski team started practice on Thursday. The girls' basketball, gymnastics, and boys' soccer teams are also preparing. On the twenty-second of this month, basketball and wrestling starts.

With the wrestling season just around the corner, the team is getting down to work. After a record of 13 and 7 last year, the team has high goals. Many wrestlers are training and hoping to make it to the state competition this year. They are hoping for great accomplishments in this season.

"Making it is the film is my goal," said senior captain [unclear].

Most wrestlers are also training hard to improve their techniques and stay focused. "My goal is to make it state," said senior Aaron Buckley.

The wrestling team has many goals, some of which consist of winning the conference and making it to state possibly.

"If everything goes well, we hope to go to state," said sophomore Brandon [unclear].

While the wrestling team has many goals, the goal is to go to state. A few years ago, they were making a lot of progress.

"The team goal is to make it to the state championships," said senior [unclear].

Several challenges face the team, such as the loss of many [unclear] and the challenge of being in a tough conference.

"I think our challenge is to compete as a team," said senior Jason Dylia.

For some, the wrestlers are finding themselves are harder than the team goals.

"If we want to be successful in our conference, we must be a team," said senior [unclear].

"My dad was a wrestler, so I want to be a wrestler like him," said senior [unclear].

Practice for the team starts on November 15. The first match is on December 2 against St. Michael.

I am doing this article for the sake and interest of all who know and aren't Robert DeNiro fans. For the people who can't seem to find anything to do on the weekend.

I choose Robert DeNiro as the subject because he is one of the most talented actors of our time. The films that he has made are a delight to the discerning critic, Martin Scorsese. Though he is a great actor, his films are not always easy to watch.

The first, and one of DeNiro's best, is Raging Bull, a movie about the life of Jake LaMotta. Of course, Scorsese was directing, and DeNiro was fantastic. Cape Fear was the 1991 film that he made about himself. The movie is a thriller, and for his role in it, he was given an Academy Award. It was a great performance.

This film is unique in the way that it was shot. It was almost entirely in black and white, except for a few color sequences. Raging Bull is the title of the film, and it is a very powerful movie. It is a movie that is hard to watch, but it is a movie that you must see.

Robert DeNiro definitely deserves his nomination for an Oscar, but a good actor is more than just a good actor. He must be able to connect with the audience. He must be able to make the audience feel something. Cape Fear is all about that. It is a movie that is about fear, and it is a movie that is about the fear of losing everything you have. It is a movie that is about the fear of being alone.

We have seen the film printed on many different formats. One of my personal favorites is the DVD version. It is a very good version of the film. It is a very good way to watch the film.

Gritty Raging Bull captures the raw emotion of the film. It is a very powerful movie. It is a movie that will stay with you long after you have seen it.

One of my personal favorites, Guilty by Exception, has shown how a reaction can get from what was unknown and how it affects us. All of these films are very good, and they are all very important films. They are all films that show the talent of Robert DeNiro. He is a great actor, and he is a great filmmaker. He is a great artist.
